March is one of my favorite times at ILC because we go maple sugaring. We are always the first group to go out to our Nature Center and tap the trees. This year the sap was running, but unfortunately there was no snow for sledding. We did take a hike after lunch and learned about trees. It is always great to get out of the city and wander in nature.
The International Learning Center, a program of Neighborhood House of Milwaukee, received the First Lady Jessica Doyle Award for Family Literacy at Wisconsin Literacy’s Celebration of Literacy. The Early Childhood and Home Visitation Program educates refugee families from Southeast Asia and Africa. Children who participate develop the literacy, social, and cognitive skills to be successful in school and meet the Milwaukee Public Schools kindergarten learning targets. Through parenting education, parents acquire skills that strengthen the family unit and affirm parents as their child’s first teacher and lifelong partners in education. Congratulations to instructors Bao Her and Phan Sanford and all the staff and volunteers at ILC!
I discovered your blog while reading a story about International Learning Center. Teachers like you make a positeve difference, for all students, including ones who come from parents who are not educated. Any volunteer opportunities?
